The very opening of Bridget welcoming everyone to the 2008 video was shot the first night of the 2007-2008 advisory board's summer meeting at Red Willow Bible Camp.
Jacob and Bridget's segments were shot at Fargo's Shanley High School after a Breakdown performance.
While filming at Shanley, school was just being dismissed and we only had brief opportunities to film in between groups of students walking down the hall.
Discussion was shot at multiple places, including Hillsboro High School, the Jamestown Civic Center, the Jamestown Youth Center, and Red Willow Bible Camp.
The scene from the "Heroes" segment with the "kid nobody wants to sit by" was filmed in the Bismarck Century cafeteria.
For the scene in the cafeteria, we purchased the trays, but were unable to do much for food on the trays. You may notice that there are only cookies, Goldfish crackers, plastic cups, cans of pop, and pudding snack packs on people's trays.
In an effort to make it seem like there is more on his tray, Andrew Young (who played the "kid nobody wants ot sit by") has a crushed up cookie covering a portion of his tray.
The part of the scene where somebody throws food at Andrew was shot twice. The first time, Megan Jury (off camera) threw the food - a snack pack - past Andrew's head from a distance of about five feet.
While the next attempt at throwing the snack pack at Andrew was a success, the girl (played by Brianna Thompson) who helps Andrew entered the shot from the wrong side of the camera.
Another take was successfully done with Brianna and Andrew interacting perfectly at the end of their scene. However, the previous botched shot and this new shot had to be spliced together because Brianna could be seen waiting for Andrew to drop his tray in the new shot.
The scene from the "Heroes" segment with the "depressed girl" (played by Megan Jury) was shot in the advisory board member Cady Mittlestadt's room.
While Megan is sitting on the bed, sticking out like a sore thumb is a "Tootsie Roll" stuffed pillow. We decided to keep the pseudo product placement in the shot, and attempted to get it in the shot as much as we could.
In a little bit of a continuity blunder, after the shot of Megan looking at an opened magazine, the camera switches to a wider angle and a pillow appears suddenly at her side (which she soon grabs for comfort).
The scene from the "Heroes" segment with the "role model (played by Dan Peterson) and his brother" was shot at my (Cory's) aunt's house. She was not expecting us.
The "little brother" of Dan was played by a nephew of then-advisory-board member Chelsea Nygaard. Her younger nephew is shown at the end of the opening segment of the video (the kid that says "SADD Rocks").
Both baseball gloves used to show Dan and Chelsea's nephew playing catch were mine. Mine was too large for Chelsea's nephew and that made it hard for him to catch the ball.
In my haste to finish the shot before it got too dark, I forgot to press the record button for part of this scene. Dan and I returned the next day to redo the shot with noticeably different lighting conditions.
For the scene with the girl (played by Courtney Klein) coming out of the clinic, we wanted to have her looking for a pregnancy test. However, we couldn't find a pharmacy that would let video cameras into the store. We then looked for some pregnancy pamphlets, but couldn't find any, so we had to settle with a black and white photocopy of an STD pamphlet, which changes the meaning of the shot a little bit.
The classroom scene of the "Count on Me" segment was filmed in a classroom at Jamestown High, as were the locker scenes and the scene with the "girl sitting by herself in the hall", shown on the front of the DVD case and on the DVD menu.
Brooke's role as the teacher in the classroom scene is her second role as a teacher in our SADD videos (her first coming in the 2006 video).
The restaurant inside of the Gladstone Inn was the scene of the "girl with an eating disorder" (played by Karly Moen) for the "Count on Me" segment.
In the "Count on Me" segment, the girlfriend (played by Mairin Jameson) really does slap her boyfriend (played by Nathan McGee). Nathan consented to actually get slapped, and Mairin didn't hold back. Take a look in the outtakes and you'll see the reaction of everybody.
As if it wasn't painful enough to get slapped, the scene shot outside was done in single-digit temperatures.
All of the "Count on Me" shots were shot on Mairin's birthday. Footage of her breaking open her birthday piñata are shown early in the video.
