What SADD Means to Me

by Abby Stogner

What does SADD mean to me? It’s not my first time answering this question, but each time I am asked, I find a new way to answer. SADD is more than an organization of students who are against making harmful decisions, personally and for our peers. To me, SADD is a group of people that I can trust. It’s a group of people that are there to help me with anything I’m struggling with. In SADD, I have met lifelong friends and mentors. I could not imagine my world without my SADD family. I know that everyone in SADD has his or her own story and reasons for being involved, and I think it’s so cool. There is a strong sense of community where no one judges you for your past. If you make a mistake, they are there to help. I want all students to be a part of SADD; it has something for everyone.

As the next Student of the Year, I have many plans. I want to get the word out about the importance of having strong self-esteem. Having struggled with this problem myself, I know it is an issue on the rise for students. We need to shine a brighter light on the problem and help those who are struggling. SADD can create a community to share our experiences and help those who are in need.

I’m sure that as the year goes on, we’ll get to know each other better, and I know that you’ll be hearing from me often. Have a wonderful day and remember YOU are worth it!

Thank you Abby for your strong positive message. It is very true that strong self-esteem is important. This is true at any age, but very true for adolescents. In impacts how one makes decisions, how one things of themselves, and how you project yourself. Confidence is built on self-esteem. We hope to have a Chapter here on the Pine Ridge Reservation at our school. I teach at Little Wound School K-12 with about 800 students. With my students all 9-12 graders I get to witness the struggles and the joys.
